Bauwens is developing a sustainable residential quarter on the land between Schaffrathsgasse and Lerchenweg in Cologne-Bocklemünd. The approximately 13,000 square meter site is currently home to a commercial area. Michels' design, which was selected in an architectural competition, envisages 160 apartments and a daycare center. A large neighborhood square with public play and recreation areas is to be created in the center of the site – a green heart. Seven residential buildings are grouped around this. A 125-meter-long building block completes the residential area towards Militärringstraße.
The complex is almost entirely car-free – in order to create a sustainable range of individual mobility options, the complex will have 300 bicycle parking spaces, e-bike stations and car-sharing stations. The design focuses on energy supply that is as climate-neutral as possible. The innovative use of waste heat from the sewage system and geothermal energy are cornerstones of the energy supply concept. The roof areas will be equipped with photovoltaic systems to supply electricity. Green spaces and green facades ensure a pleasant climate and, thanks to their varied design, give each building its own identity.
