On the land between Schaffrathsgasse and Lerchenweg in Cologne-Bocklemünd, Bauwens is developing a sustainable apartment complex. The approximately 13,000-qm site is currently home to a predominantly commercial area. The design by Michels, which emerged from an architectural competition, calls for 160 apartments and a daycare center. At the heart of the site, a large neighborhood square with public play and recreational areas is to be created—a green center. Seven residential buildings are grouped around it. A building block approximately 125 meters long completes the residential area toward Militärringstraße.
The complex is almost entirely car-free—to provide sustainable options for individual mobility, the plan includes 300 bicycle parking spaces, e-bike stations, and car-sharing stations. In terms of energy supply, the design aims for operations that are as climate-neutral as possible. The innovative use of waste heat from the sewer system and geothermal energy are cornerstones of the energy supply concept. To generate electricity, the rooftops will be equipped with photovoltaic systems. Green spaces and green facades ensure a pleasant climate and, thanks to their varied designs, give each building its own distinct identity.
